Do I need car insurance?

In Quebec, auto insurance is mandatory. The Automobile Insurance Act requires all vehicle owners to take out civil liability insurance with a private insurer.

What does car insurance include in Quebec?

Car insurance in Quebec covers two things: civil liability and damage to the insured vehicle.

Civil Liability Insurance

Vehicle owners must have at least $50,000 of civil liability coverage with a private insurer. This coverage (Section A) includes any material damages the insured may cause to a third party in an accident that occurs in Quebec. It also covers material damages and bodily injury to third parties because of accidents elsewhere in Canada or the U.S.

Damage Insurance

Vehicle owners may also take out insurance to cover damage to their vehicle. The following coverage is optional:

  • “All Perils” insurance (Section B1) covers all direct damage to a vehicle, with certain exceptions. It includes sections B2 and B3.
  • “Collision or Upset” insurance (Section B2) covers damages from a collision caused by the insured, from an accident not involving another vehicle, or when the insured is the victim of a hit-and-run.
  • “Comprehensive” insurance (Section B3) covers fire, theft, vandalism, and broken windows, among other risks.
  • “Specified Perils” insurance (Section B4) covers risks such as fire and theft.

Additional Coverage

You can also add additional coverage based on your specific needs.
