National Do Not Call List

On September 30, 2008, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) launched the National Do Not Call List (DNCL). The following are some frequently asked questions to give you a better understanding of how the National DNCL works as well as the commitment SSQ General Insurance has made as regards solicitation.

How does the National DNCL work?

Canadian consumers who no longer want to receive solicitation calls can register their home telephone, cell, and fax numbers on the National DNCL at www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca. This list contains contact numbers – not people’s names – and the information is kept for three years.

Are there exceptions to the National DNCL?

Yes, certain types of organizations are exempt, notably political parties, charities, newspapers, and polling firms.

If I have registered my telephone number on the National DNCL, can I receive calls from SSQ General Insurance?

Yes, if one of the following conditions applies:

  • You are or have been a customer in the last 18 months.
  • You have requested a quote or participated in a contest online.
  • You have authorized SSQ General Insurance to contact you by telephone.
  • You have expressed interest in receiving information on SSQ General Insurance products and services (this consent is valid for 6 months).
  • You registered your numbers on the National DNCL less than one month ago (because the CRTC allows businesses a period of 31 days to update their DNCL information).

Can I also receive solicitation emails or postal mailings?

Yes, because the National DNCL only governs telephone and fax solicitation.

How does SSQ General Insurance ensure that proper solicitation practices are followed?

SSQ General Insurance complies with the CRTC Unsolicited Telecommunications Rules and its own strict solicitation protocol in order to always respect the customer’s choice. To do this, it developed a Personal Information Protection Policy and keeps an internal opt-out list.
