Legal Assistance

I'm a homeowner. Do I need insurance?

As a homeowner, you need home insurance to cover your home, your personal property, and civil liability.

What does insurance for a homeowner include?

A homeowner's insurance is divided into two parts: property and civil liability.

Property

Multi-peril insurance covers the following:

  • Your dwelling, which includes your house, attached private structures, and any permanently installed outdoor structures, such as fences and landscape architecture
  • Detached private structures located on the premises, such as a garden shed, a detached garage, etc.
  • Your personal property, i.e., the entire contents of your dwelling as well as any personal property that may be temporarily situated off the premises
  • Additional living expenses incurred due to loss of use, i.e., expenses your family would not normally incur as regular living expenses
  • Fair rental value, i.e., the monthly rent or other income you have lost as a result of an insured occurrence

Civil Liability

Multi-peril insurance also covers civil liability. This means you are not financially responsible for bodily injury or material harm that is involuntarily caused to a third party. SSQ home insurance also covers your legal fees for prosecution, investigation, and defense in a civil liability case.
