Do I need car insurance?

In Quebec, automobile insurance is mandatory. The Automobile Insurance Act requires all vehicle owners to purchase liability insurance from a private insurer.

 

Liability insurance: required coverage
 

Coverage You are covered when...
Liability insurance of at least $50,000* is required* You cause damage to a third party's property during an accident that occurs in Quebec (bodily injury is generally covered by SAAQ, under its no-fault plan)
You cause bodily injury to a third party and damage to his/her property during an accident that occurs outside Quebec

*Increasing the insurance amount to $1 or $2 million is recommended, particularly if you drive outside Quebec.

You cause an accident that does not involve any other vehicles (e.g., loss of control)
