Do I need car insurance?
In Quebec, automobile insurance is mandatory. The Automobile Insurance Act requires all vehicle owners to purchase liability insurance from a private insurer.
Liability insurance: required coverage

| Liability insurance of at least $50,000* is required* | You cause damage to a third party's property during an accident that occurs in Quebec (bodily injury is generally covered by SAAQ, under its no-fault plan) |
| You cause bodily injury to a third party and damage to his/her property during an accident that occurs outside Quebec |
*Increasing the insurance amount to $1 or $2 million is recommended, particularly if you drive outside Quebec.
